Jaguar Type 01 Revealed: How the 2027 EV Resets the Brand

Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer that turns the brand's long-promised reinvention into a production programme. The car is significant beyond its performance figures: it introduces a dedicated electric architecture, moves Jaguar further upmarket and gives JLR a distinct all-electric flagship while the group's other brands retain a broader mix of powertrains.

The official JLR corporate announcement, dated 7 October 2026, says production will begin in 2027 at Solihull in the United Kingdom. Orders are planned for early 2027, with the separate Jaguar technical release placing first customer deliveries in the second half of the year. Neither cited release announces an Indian launch, local booking process, rupee price or delivery timetable.

Why Type 01 matters to Jaguar's business strategy

JLR describes Type 01 as a milestone in the Jaguar strategy first set out in 2021. The company wants Jaguar to occupy a different part of the luxury market from Range Rover, Defender and Discovery. That separation is intended to let each brand pursue a clearer customer group rather than compete inside the same portfolio.

JLR says it is targeting double-digit growth over the next five years through brand-led expansion, broader propulsion flexibility across the group and a greater focus on North America. Jaguar is the exception within that propulsion plan because it is being positioned as uniquely all-electric. Type 01 is therefore both a product and a test of whether the company can rebuild Jaguar around lower volume, higher price and a more distinctive identity.

The investment behind the strategy is substantial. JLR says it announced a £15-18 billion five-year investment programme in 2024 and has since invested £11.5 billion in engineering, design and manufacturing for its next-generation vehicles. Type 01 will use a dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture, or JEA, rather than adapting a platform from another model line.

Jaguar Type 01 specifications officially confirmed

Jaguar's specifications place Type 01 firmly in the high-performance luxury-EV segment. The manufacturer lists an 850-volt electrical architecture, a 118 kWh usable battery and three motors producing up to 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm. JLR quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds in its corporate release and describes a 50:50 weight distribution.

The company anticipates an EPA range of up to 400 miles, or about 644 km, and says the car can add up to 200 miles, approximately 321 km, in as little as 13 minutes on a 350 kW DC charger. These are manufacturer targets tied to a specific test standard and charging conditions. They are not an ARAI-certified India range, and peak charging power alone does not show the full charging curve or real stop duration.

The technical release also confirms a 0.23 drag coefficient, 23-inch standard wheels, active aerodynamic elements and more than 360 patent applications. The cabin uses a 24-inch OLED driver display and a separate seven-inch central control screen. Those details show that Jaguar is using design, software and performance to justify the car's premium positioning rather than competing mainly on battery size or range.

Manufacturing is central to the relaunch

Type 01's production plan links several UK operations. JLR says final assembly will take place at Solihull, electric drive units and battery packs will come from Wolverhampton, and pressed body panels will be made at Halewood. Production-line work is described as advanced, with manufacturing due to start in 2027.

The company also says nearly 9,000 Solihull employees have been retrained to build electric vehicles, with another 1,500 colleagues trained across its wider West Midlands operations. Those numbers matter because they show that Jaguar's change is not limited to branding or a single show car; it requires new industrial processes, skills and a coordinated supply chain.

What the price says about Jaguar's new position

JLR's UK corporate release gives a starting price of £130,000. That figure positions Type 01 as a luxury flagship and should not be converted into an expected Indian price. Taxes, homologation, shipping, import structure, options, insurance and local commercial decisions can materially change a vehicle's final cost in India.

The high starting point also raises the standard Jaguar must meet. Buyers in this segment will compare cabin craftsmanship, personalisation, charging support, software reliability, service access and residual-value protection alongside acceleration and design. A dramatic launch can attract attention; consistent ownership support will determine whether the repositioning creates durable demand.

What Indian buyers should wait to see

For India, the most important facts remain unannounced. Prospective buyers should wait for confirmation from Jaguar Land Rover India on availability, whether the car will be a full import, local charging compatibility, warranty terms, service readiness, booking amount and delivery timing. An international configurator or overseas price is not a substitute for a local offer.

If Type 01 is announced for India, buyers should ask for the certified local range, DC charging curve, supported connector standard, home-charger package, battery warranty, roadside assistance and the availability of replacement tyres for its large wheels. Ground clearance, turning circle and rear-seat access also deserve an in-person assessment because the car is 5,235 mm long and uses a low grand-tourer profile.

How to read the headline charging claim

Adding 200 miles in 13 minutes sounds compelling, but real charging depends on battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger output, voltage compatibility, site conditions and how long the car can sustain high power. A buyer should compare a full 10-80% charging test and the average power across that session, not only the maximum rate.

Public chargers capable of delivering 350 kW are still uncommon in many markets. Owners may therefore experience longer stops on lower-power equipment. Home charging is also relevant: a 118 kWh usable battery can take a long time to refill on a modest AC connection, so the local wall-box specification and available electrical load should be confirmed before purchase.

Can Type 01 rebuild Jaguar?

Type 01 gives Jaguar a coherent flagship, a dedicated platform and a manufacturing path. Its specifications create a clear performance story, while the high price and distinctive design separate it from mainstream electric sedans. Those are concrete steps toward a new market position.

The larger test begins after orders open: production quality, software stability, charging performance and customer support must match the promise. For Indian buyers, the sensible approach is to follow official local announcements and compare the complete ownership proposition only when Jaguar confirms the car for this market.
